Sibylla Rubens

Sibylla Rubens

Sibylla Rubens enchants with her ability to tell stories while singing and to bring her songs and arias to life. Her heartfelt voice and wide-ranging repertoire make her an internationally sought-after luminary.

This is evidenced by numerous concerts with renowned orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Philippe Herreweghe, concerts at Carnegie Hall New York, with Christian Thielemann with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and in Montreal and Hamburg with Kent Nagano. She has toured Europe with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Ivan Fischer and Asia with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Thomanerchor Leipzig under the direction of Gotthold Schwarz. The soprano has also appeared on concert stages in Baden-Baden, Barcelona, Dresden, Leipzig, Milan, Madrid, Mulhouse and Saarbrücken. Other conductors with whom she has worked include Helmuth Rilling, Jun Märkl, Hartmut Haenchen, Manfred Honeck, Roger Norrington, Herbert Blomstedt, Michael Gielen, Marek Janowski and Riccardo Chailly.

Sibylla Rubens studied concert and opera singing at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Trossingen and at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt/Main. She was a member of Irwin Gage's master class for song interpretation in Zurich and completed her training in numerous master classes with Edith Mathis and Elsa Cavelti in Basel, among others. As a committed teacher and supporter of young singers, she gives master classes herself and, in addition to her concert engagements as a private lecturer, is a sought-after capacity and point of contact for numerous international professional singers. Sibylla Rubens was on the board of directors of the Leipzig Bach Society for ten years and led the oratorio class at the Leopold Mozart Center at the University of Augsburg from 2014-2016. She is a regular jury member at international singing competitions. This includes the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, the Schubert Lied Duo Competition in Dortmund and currently as jury chair of the Josephine Lang Lied Duo Competition in Tübingen. She has supported the German Music Council's National Youth Choir as a voice coach since 2020.

Lieder recitals are particularly close to Sibylla Rubens' heart. She has worked closely with Irwin Gage. Current recital and chamber music programs can be heard together with Gerold Huber, Götz Payer, Doriana Tschakarova and Carl-Martin Buttgereit, at the Gustav Jenner Festival on Sylt, Stralsund, Münster, Freiburg and the 50th Reutlingen Chamber Music Cycle.

Around 100 CD recordings for various labels, including hänssler, Carus and harmonia mundi (passions and cantatas by J.S. Bach, the complete song oeuvre of Humperdinck, Mendelssohn's Elijah and Lobgesang) testify to her artistic versatility. Deutsche Grammophon has recordings of Mozart's Requiem (under Christian Thielemann), Naxos has Lied recordings (Schumann: Lieder and Songs op 42 and Schubert: Hirt auf dem Felsen and Romantic Poets). The world premiere recording of the newly discovered “Sacred Works” by Luigi Cherubini with the Chamber Choir / Ensemble Frauenkirche Dresden under the direction of Matthias Grünert has been released by Rondeau. Together with Carl Martin Buttgereit he recently released the CD “Erwartung” with songs by Anton Urspruch and Franz Liszt (Kaleidos). Sibylla Rubens sings songs, duets and ensemble on Christian Gerhaher's large-scale Sony recording of all Schumann songs, accompanied by Gerold Huber - a co-production with Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Heidelberger Liedzentrum.
